What is the STC?

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is the world's largest professional association for Technical Writers, Technical Editors, Graphic Designers, Technical Illustrators, Managers of Technical Communication Departments, Teachers of Technical Communication, Web Designers, Technical Translators, and anyone else whose job involves communicating technical information. STC keeps both entry-level and veteran communicators up to date on the latest technology and trends of the profession. It serves more than 25,000 members worldwide in developing their educational and professional skills.

What can an STC student chapter do for you?

Help You Network
STC provides networking opportunities. For example, you could find your first job at a student chapter meeting. The chapter's student officers invite employees from hiring companies to speak at STC meetings. You also have the chance to meet others in the field of Technical Communication at STC meetings and through STC's many communication networks.

Help You Get a Job
Not only will your STC student chapter help you with networking, but it can also help you find an internship/co-op during school and a job after graduation. The STC web site, www.stc.org, contains a searchable job database with hundreds of technical communication jobs. The Society also prints job opportunities in its publications and sends them out in e-mail bulletins.

Help You Meet New People
Every STC student chapter meeting gives you the opportunity to meet new students, professors, and other professionals in the field of Technical Communication. While at meetings, you can share your ideas and knowledge about what is new in the field. These people can help by giving you feedback on your work so that it will become a polished work of art.

Teach You New Software
Trying to keep up to date with the industry's new software technologies can be really difficult. In the field of Technical Communication, it is imperative for you to stay current with the latest software. Students and professionals in the Technical Communication field come to meetings and teach you how to use the latest software. All you have to do is sit back and watch!

Teach You Communication Skills
Your STC student chapter gives you the opportunity to improve your communication skills. You have the chance to speak one-on-one with professionals in the field and with other STC members. These opportunities can help you become more comfortable when speaking in high-stress situations.

Teach You Leadership Skills
To get the most out of your STC student chapter, become involved in the chapter's activities. With this valuable experience, you'll have the chance to serve in a student chapter leadership position, for example, as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, or even President! These positions enable you to learn important leadership skills that you will use throughout your college career as well as in your professional career.
